Matt Martin is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who plays wing for the New York Islanders. He is married to Sydney Esiason Martin.

Sydney was raised primarily in Cincinnati; however, she was born on Long Island, New York, on August 15, 1992. She also served as the on-air digital host for the National Hockey League (NHL) and the former host of Manhattan, New York’s Sports Illustrated.


On June 29, 2019, the pair was married nearer to their Southampton, New York, residence. However, not many details are known to the public about their marriage; the couple had an extremely closed-off wedding. 


Regarding her education, she graduated from Friends Academy. Sydney attended a college preparatory program before enrolling at Boston College. She played women’s lacrosse for Boston College and earned her degree in Arts with a major in English and Communications in 2014.


In the summer of 2012, she started as a PR intern for Maxim Magazine and later worked at PAULE KA. She also interned at CBS This Morning. Her background in sports led her to work in the same industry, specifically in sports broadcasting.


She worked as a tailgate reporter for Jets Nation from 2014 to 2015, her first job out of college. She then worked for the NHL as an on-air digital host before moving on to Sports Illustrated in Manhattan, New York, as an anchor.


She presently resides in Long Island, New York, together with her spouse, Matt, their dog, Jax, and a new baby girl who will be joining them in the fall.


On July 14, 2020, Matt and Sydney welcomed Windsor Grace Martin, a baby girl, as their first child. Jax is their Rottweiler dog companion.

Matt Martin’s Professional Career

The New York Islanders selected Martin 148th overall in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. On September 4, 2009, Martin signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Islanders. On October 29, 2010, Martin scored his first NHL goal against the Montreal Canadiens’ Alex Auld.


Martin and the Islanders reached a four-year contract agreement on September 15, 2012. With 382 checks in the 2014–15 NHL season, Martin set the record for most hits in a single season. Ice hockey observers regarded Martin’s line, which included himself, Casey Cizikas, and Cal Clutterbuck, as one of the greatest fourth lines in the NHL the next season during the 2015–16 campaign.
