The New York Islanders selected Martin 148th overall in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. On September 4, 2009, Martin signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Islanders. On October 29, 2010, Martin scored his first NHL goal against the Montreal Canadiens’ Alex Auld.
Martin and the Islanders reached a four-year contract agreement on September 15, 2012. With 382 checks in the 2014–15 NHL season, Martin set the record for most hits in a single season.
