Whitney won a silver medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics while competing for the United States internationally. After finishing his first year at Boston University, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the fifth overall pick in the 2002 NHL Entry. Whitney played his NHL debut season in 2005–06 after spending three seasons with the Wilkes–Barre/Scranton Penguins, the Penguins’ minor league club.
Having spent three and a half more seasons in Pittsburgh, Whitney assisted the team in reaching the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals. He spent a brief time with the Anaheim Ducks before being dealt to the Edmonton Oilers in 2010. He made his professional hockey retirement known on September 20, 2015.
