Smriti Mandhana: Biography, Career, and Achievements
Smriti Mandhana was born on 18th July 1996. Her full name is Smriti Shriniwas Mandhana. She is an Indian cricketer who currently plays for the Indian women’s national squad and was signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore to play in the WPL (Women’s Premier League). For the time being, she is a part of the domestic cricket team for the Maharashtra cricket squad.
In June 2018, Mandhana was the recipient of BCCI awards for the Best Women’s International Cricketer as awarded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). She was also the recipient of the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Award for the best female cricketer of the year awarded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in December 2018. Mandhana was nominated for the ICC Women’s T20 Player of the Year in December 2021. She was again nominated alongside Tammy Beaumont, Lizelle Lee, and Gaby Lewis for the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year in December 2021. She was awarded the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Award for the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year by the ICC in January 2022.
Widely acknowledged as one of the best women’s cricketers of all time, the cricketer was signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore with a whopping Rs. 3.40 crore on February 13, 2023, at the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction.
Smriti Mandhana: Family and Early Life
Hailing from Mumbai, Maharashtra, Smriti Mandhana was born to Smita and Shrinivas Mandhana in a typical Marwari family. She was born on July 18th, 1996. As of March 2023, Mandhana is 26 years old.
When Mandhana was just two years old, her family shifted to Madhavnagar, Sangli in Maharashtra, where she finished her early education. Both Mandhana’s father and brother, Shravan are former cricketers although they played the sport at the district level, for Sangli. Her inspiration for wanting to play cricket came from closely watching her brother Shravan play at the U-16 Maharashtra state tournaments. Following in her father and brother’s footsteps, she was picked for the Maharashtra U-15 team when she was just nine years old. At 11, she was selected for the Maharashtra U-19 team.
Mandhana’s family is her greatest support system as they are always present in all of her cricketing activities. Her father Shrinivas who works as a chemical distributor is in charge of her cricket schedules, her mother Smita looks after her diet, apparel, and other organizational parts, and lastly, her brother Shravan is in charge of bowling to her in the nets.
