Among the many teams featured in the NBA, we have listed down below the 5 oldest teams you need to know.

  • Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings was founded way back in 1923 when they were still a semi-pro squad known as the Rochester Seagrams. In 1945, they entered the National Basketball League (NBL) as the renamed Rochester Royals, triumphing over that league’s title in their first season, 1945 to 1946. The team later leaped with three other NBL squads to the Basketball Association of America, the forebear of the National Basketball Association (NBA), in 1948.

The team which back then was known as the Royals was a dominant force on the court, besting the NBA title in 1951. However, the team found it extremely tough to turn a profit in the equally undersized market of Rochester and resettled to Cincinnati in 1957 and later renamed it the Cincinnati Royals.

  • Detroit Pistons

Founded in 1941, the Pistons were a part of the National Basketball League (NBL) and were previously known as Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons and Fort Wayne Pistons and are currently owned by Tom Gores.

Following the team’s founding, they entered the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1948 and stayed behind as a member of the league following the merger between the NBL and BAA and thus forming into one organization which is the NBA. About ten years later, the Pistons relocated from Fort Wayne to Detroit, where the squad has been sticking around since then.

  • Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics of the NBA was founded in 1946 and is among the NBA’s original eight squads, before the merger it was known as the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and was established in 1946. The squad regularly participated in Boston and has always been known as the Celtics.

  • New York Knicks

The New York Knicks was founded in 1946 and have always been known by that name or just the Knicks in short. The team is currently owned by Madison Square Garden company. The Knicks were also part of the founding squads of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the forerunner of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Much comparatively to the other founding squads, the New York Knicks have always called New York City its home and have also played in the exact stadium.

  • Golden State Warriors

Founded in 1946, the Golden State Warriors joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) and played its first season that same founding year.  The team was previously named Philadelphia Warriors and San Francisco Warriors but later changed to the Golden State Warriors which is currently owned by Joe Lacob and Peter Guber.

The Golden State Warriors are among one of the only three squads that have been around in the NBA that were a part of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The team initially began in Philadelphia and was previously owned by Peter A. Terrell. The Warriors, however, moved to San Francisco in 1962 and were renamed the Golden State Warriors in 1971.
