By Born on April 28, 1970, in Avesta, Dalarnas län, Sweden, Nicklas Lidstrom is a Swedish retired pro hockey defenseman who played the entire 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Detroit Red Wings from 1991 to 2012 he also served as the team’s captain for the last six seasons. Lidstrom is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest defencemen in the history of the NHL and is often referred to as “The Perfect Human”, for his defense and playmaking skills.
During his 20 NHL seasons, the former Wings defenceman won the Stanley Cup title four times, was the recipient of the James Norris Memorial Trophy seven times which was given to the top defenceman of the NHL, and one Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. He is also a twelve-time NHL All-Star Game. Lidstrom was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, the IIFH Hall of Fame in 2014, and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015. In his career, he has never once missed the playoffs, the longest in NHL history for a player to have appeared in all the playoffs. He is an all-time leader in matches played with one NHL squad by a player from Europe.
