By Laura Wolvdaardt who was born on the 26th of April 1999 is a South African cricketer. Currently, she is a part of Western Province, Adelaide Strikers, Northern Superchargers, and South Africa. She is a right-handed opener and has formerly played for Brisbane Heat as well.
Wolvaardt, at the age of 13 was picked to appear for the Western Province Under-19 girls’ team. She made her debut in October 2013 for the Western Province senior squad in a T20 match against Boland ladies, striking 13 chases from 18 balls. The right-handed batter made her limited overs cricket first appearance for Western Province which they played against Boland in November 2013, striking four from 14 balls. The South African cricketer was the lead scorer in the 2013 cricket South Africa U-19 Girls Week and participated again in 2014 as a part of Western Province. She stroked 46 in the last match with the Western Province in the 2015 to 2016 Women’s Provincial League, as they triumphed in the title for the fourth successive year.
Laura also served as the captain of the South Africa Women’s Under-19 squad, and finally made her debut in the Women’s One Day International in February 2016 in the opening game of a 3-match sequence against England when she was just 16. In the 2nd match of the series, she stroked her first 50 in a 114-chase partnership with Trisha Chetty. Laura also participated in a match against West Indies and managed to score 10 in an opening partnership of 33 chases.
In 2016, Wolvaardt made history as she became the youngest Centurion by male or female for South Africa in International cricket. The talented female cricketer was also declared as Women’s Newcomer of the Year at Cricket South Africa in 2017.
