Hamlin was born in Tampa, Florida, and raised in Chesterfield, Virginia. Denny started his racing career in 1988, when she was 7. At 15, Hamlin won his first-ever tournament at the WKA Manufacturers Cup. In 1998, he started driving a mini truck, and his first stock race was at Langley Speedway, where he scored 1st.
After his win at Langley Speedway, Denny was promoted to the Grand Stock division in 1998 and moved on to Late Model Stock Cars in 2000.
