The Cincinnati Bengals are facing a challenging situation as their star quarterback, Joe Burrow, is set to miss several weeks of action due to a calf strain injury suffered in a practice session. To ensure they have ample coverage during Burrow’s absence, the team is diligently exploring their options, including working out two former XFL quarterbacks, Reid Sinnett and Drew Plitt.

Reid Sinnett’s journey through the NFL has been marked by brief stints with prominent teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, and Philadelphia Eagles. His most recent outing was with the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas, where a foot injury landed him on the injured reserve list. Despite this setback, Sinnett showed glimpses of potential during one XFL game, throwing for 97 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Before being considered by the Bengals, he also garnered attention from the Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks.

Drew Plitt, another prospect under the Bengals’ radar, was part of the team’s training camp the previous year while Burrow was recovering from an appendectomy. Plitt further honed his skills in the XFL, appearing in five games for the Arlington Renegade, and impressing spectators with a 25-yard touchdown pass during the ’22 NFL preseason.

The addition of either Sinnett or Plitt would provide Cincinnati with a much-needed quarterback insurance policy during Burrow’s absence. While the team currently has two primary backup quarterbacks Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning, the depth and experience that a former XFL player could bring might prove invaluable in navigating through a competitive NFL season.

Fortunately, there is hope that Burrow will be back on the field by Week 1 of the regular season, as reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. This news should ease the Bengals’ concerns about their starting signal-callers long-term absence. However, having a reliable backup option in place would undoubtedly offer reassurance to the team and fans alike, given the importance of Burrow to the Bengals’ success.
