Hockey may not be as widespread compared to football or basketball but it is still a significant sport in the US and Canada.  The NHL in particular is one of the most popular league’s on the planet. In the NHL, as many as 32 teams contest to win the prestigious Stanley Cup. While several of the teams have won the Stanley Cup title, there are some teams that still haven’t won the league’s Cup but this doesn’t mean that the team is weak or doesn’t have any good players and these teams can still be fan’ favorites. Here in this post, we will take a look at the top 5 teams of the NHL.

The Montreal Canadiens is a professional ice hockey team based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1909, it is one of the oldest and most successful teams in the National Hockey League. They have won a record 24 Stanley Cup championships, more than any other NHL team, with their most recent championship coming in 1993. With that said, it’s been three decades since their last Stanley Cup and Canadiens fans are rooting for the team to lift the cup once again. Nonetheless, the Canadiens have won numerous other awards and honors, including the President’s Trophy, the Prince of Wales Trophy, and the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl.

2. Toronto Maple Leafs:

The Toronto Maple Leafs is a professional ice hockey team based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1917, it is one of the oldest teams in the National Hockey League. The Maple Leafs have won 13 Stanley Cup championships, which is the second-most of any NHL team, with their most recent championship coming in 1967. They have also won numerous other awards and honours, including the President’s Trophy and the Prince of Wales Trophy.

The team plays its home games at the Scotiabank Arena which is located in the downtown area of Toronto. The team also has a large and passionate fan base, and their games are a major cultural and social event in the city.

The Detroit Red Wings is a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit, Michigan, United States. They were founded in 1926 and are one of the Original Six teams in the National Hockey League. They have also won numerous other awards and honors, including the President’s Trophy and the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl.

4. Edmonton Oilers:

 The Edmonton Oilers is a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Founded in 1972, the team is a member of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). To date, they have won five Stanley Cup championships and their most recent championship came in 1990. They have also won numerous other awards and honors, including the President’s Trophy and the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl. Some of the most notable players to have played under this team over the years include Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, and Connor McDavid.

5. Chicago Blackhawks:

The Chicago Blackhawks are a professional ice hockey team based in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Founded in 1926, this team is one of the Original Six teams in the National Hockey League. They have won six Stanley Cup championships, with their most recent championship coming in 2015. Additionally, they have also won numerous other awards and honours, including the President’s Trophy and the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl. The team plays its home games at the United Center, which is located on the Near West Side of Chicago. The Blackhawks have a large and dedicated fan base, and their games are a major cultural and social event in the city.
