The story of Madrid-born attacker Sergio Camello has finally come to an end, bringing with it a combination of football intrigue and tenacity. Camello spent the season trying to win Diego Simeone over at Atletico Madrid, but his ambitions were shattered when he was selected to play for Spain in the European Under-21 Championship. Due to this unfortunate turn of events, he was unable to join Atletico for the start of the preseason, giving him few opportunities to impress the Argentine coach.
Camello quickly notified his representatives that his first objective was to get back to Rayo Vallecano when Atletico Madrid informed him that they had decided not to include him in their plans. Rayo and Camello were interested in each other, with the team eager to hire the Madrid native.
Various choices and agreements were taken into consideration throughout the transfer drama, and Rayo finally prevailed over other elite teams like Cádiz. Despite public outrage from Cádiz over their failure to even start talks with the player, Rayo’s tenacity won out.
Rayo was forced to change their original proposal, changing it from a loan arrangement to an outright acquisition of all of Camello’s federative rights. The sum was less than what Cádiz had suggested, but it was still very near to what Atletico wanted. Notably, the player’s contract with Atletico Madrid, which runs until 2027, still allows for a three-season window in which to buy the player.
Under Iraola’s direction, Camello’s ability shined through over the previous season, preparing him for his next task. He has the challenge of fitting in with a potent attacking team that includes Ral de Tomás, Falcao, and Randy Nteka as soon as he joins Rayo Vallecano. Although Ral de Tomás is the early favourite, Camello’s chances are improved by his skill and tenacity.
