By Roy Hodgson, a lifelong resident of Croydon and ardent supporter of Crystal Palace, has a fantastic football resume that has led him back to his old team. Hodgson’s career, which began at Palace as a young player, carried him through non-league clubs and eventually led him to coaching roles all around the world. But in his most recent episode, he made a full circle by going back to Palace, where he had grown up.
Hodgson had success in South Africa with Berea Park after playing for non-league teams and acquiring coaching experience as a physical education teacher. Because of his coaching skills, he was given management positions in Halmstad and Malmo, where he used creative strategies and had great success.
Hodgson’s standing increased when he led Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland and the Swiss national team to the 1994 World Cup’s round of 16. Because of his success, he was recruited by Inter Milan, Blackburn Rovers, FC Copenhagen, and Fulham, where he overcame the odds to keep the team in the Premier League and take them to the Europa League final.
Managing the England national team, West Bromwich Albion, and Liverpool were further career high points. Following a brief absence, Hodgson returned to Crystal Palace and helped them recover from a shaky start while maintaining their Premier League position year after year. Fostering emerging talent like Tyrick Mitchell and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is one notable contribution.
Hodgson has developed a strong bond with Palace via his roles as a fan, former player, and current manager. His most recent entrance into the club cemented his reputation as a local hero. Hodgson has tremendous coaching experience in several nations on three continents, but his heart is with Crystal Palace, making his return a significant and memorable chapter in his storied career.
