NHL Stanley Cup

Today, we will take a look at some of the oldest players to win an NHL Stanley Cup but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s their first Stanley Cup win, it’s more like their last win before retiring, or for some players, this could be their first win. Nevertheless, we have compiled the list of the 7 oldest players to win the NHL Stanley Cup.

1. Chris Chelios 

Age won: 48 years, 6 months

Team: Detroit Red Wings

Year: 2008

Born on January 24, 1962, Chris Chelios is an American retired pro ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL)  for the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings. In his career, he won three Stanley Cups– one with the Canadiens and two with the Wings. His last Stanley Cup was won in 2008 when he was 48 years of age making him the oldest hockey player to win the title. He retired from his career in 2010.

2. Gump Worsley

Age won: 38 years, 11 months, 27 days

Team: Montreal Canadiens

Year: 1969

Gump Worsley whose birth name was Lorne John Worsley was born on May 14th, 1929, and was a pro ice hockey goaltender. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, and Minnesota North Stars from 1952 to 1974. Having won four Stanley Cups, he won his last Stanley Cup in 1969 at the age of 38. Worskey was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1980. On January 22, 2007, the legendary goaltender suffered a heart attack which led to his demise. He breathed his last at the Hôpital Honoré-Mercier in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec.

3. Dominik Hasek

Age won: 37 years, two months

Team: Detroit Red Kings

Year: 2008

Dominik s a Czech retired ice hockey goaltender who spent most of his 16 seasons for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is considered one of the finest goaltenders of all time. The Czech goaltender also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and the Ottawa Senators. He has won two Stanley Cups both with the Detroit Red Kings. He was 37 years old when he won his last Stanley Cup in 2008 making him the third oldest NHL player to achieve this. He retired from his pro games in 2011.

4. Tim Thomas 

Age won: 37 years, two months, zero days

Team: Boston Bruins

Year: 2011

Tim was born on April 15th, 1974. He is an American retired pro ice hockey goaltender who mostly participated in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Boston Bruins. He was a part of the minor leagues and Europe for many years before officially making it to the NHL when he was 28, with the Bruins. He started playing with the Bruins as a goaltender at age thirty-two. He won his first and last Stanley Cup in 2011.

5. Patrick Roy

Age won: 35 years, eight months, four days

Team: Colorado Avalanche

Year: 2001

Patrick Roy is a Canadian retired pro ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. He is a four-time Stanley Cup winner– two with the Canadiens and two with the Avalanche. He won his last Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001.

6. Chris Osgood

Age won: 35 years, six months, nine days

Team: Detroit Red Wings

Year: 2008

Chris Osgood is a Canadian retired pro ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders, and St. Louis Blues. He is a three-time Stanley Cup winner, which he won all three during his stint with the Wings, and while two of them he won as a goaltender. Osgood’s last Stanley Cup was won in 2008, making him the sixth oldest hockey player in the history of the NHL.

7. Mike Vernon

Age won: 34 years, one month, 29 days

Team: Detroit Red Wings

Year: 1997

Mike Vernon is a Canadian retired pro ice hockey goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, and Florida Panthers. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champ, one with the Flames (1989) and one with the Red Wings (1997). He is widely considered one of the best goaltenders of all time. Vernon was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
