Le’Veon Bell, a former NFL running back, recently tried to make up with Pittsburgh Steelers supporters by sharing a video of himself expressing regret for how his time with the organisation ended. After being selected by the Steelers in the 2013 draught, Bell rose to fame in Pittsburgh swiftly, being selected for three Pro Bowls in only five seasons. After leading the league with 1,291 running yards and nine touchdowns on just 321 carries in 2017, he was named to the first team of All-Pros.
But in 2018, Bell made the contentious choice to decline the Steelers’ offer of the franchise tag in favour of sitting out the full season. Many Steelers supporters were infuriated and dismayed by the decision. In 2019, Bell signed with the New York Jets as a free agent, further separating himself from the Pittsburgh supporters.
Bell posted a video on social media in which he apologised for his conduct to address the ongoing hostility. He acknowledged that despite his absence and departure from the squad, he had never officially apologised to the supporters. Bell said he should never have gone and took full responsibility for his conduct. He also profusely apologised to the “best damn fans” in the world.
Despite the passing of time, Steelers supporters responded well to Bell’s gesture and appeared appreciative of his apologies. It soon became clear that Bell himself felt some remorse about leaving Pittsburgh.
Bell spent a complete season with the Jets in 2019 after leaving the Steelers, running for 789 yards. Later, he had a short time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, and Kansas City Chiefs. He hasn’t played, though, since the 2021 campaign.
Although it is unclear whether Bell’s apology can fully bridge the divide between him and Steelers supporters, his willingness to own up to his error and make apologies shows maturity and a desire for peace. The film serves as a reminder of the difficulties involved in professional sports as well as the potential effects that choices may have on both participants and spectators.
