According to L’Équipe, a transfer agreement has been agreed between Lens and Leipzig for Belgian attacker Los Openda, who is scheduled to have a physical on Friday in Germany.
The forward enjoyed a great season in Ligue 1, scoring 21 goals and helping his side to a second-place finish. The French daily had earlier reported that Lens were requesting a cost close to €50m, including possible bonuses for the player.
After a full day of talks, the two clubs have, however, reached an understanding and settled on a transfer cost of between €43m and €46m, plus €6m in add-ons, a future friendly match, and a portion of the player’s future transfer fee.
One of the surprises of Lens’ incredible season was Openda, who overcame all odds and completed the league just one point behind winners PSG. By scoring with both his feet and his head and only converting one penalty, he demonstrated his talent and adaptability as a striker.
He moved to Lens from Club Brugge last summer for almost €10 million, and his move to Leipzig will result in a substantial profit for the French club. He will work with his countryman Jesse Marsch, the new head coach of the Bundesliga team, and he will try to build on his remarkable performance there.
Openda graduated from Club Brugge’s academy and made his professional debut there in 2018. He scored nine goals in 25 appearances while on loan at Vitesse in the Netherlands during the 2019–20 season. Additionally, he has four caps for the senior national team and has represented Belgium at several junior levels.
Openda is renowned for his tempo, strength, fluidity, and finishing prowess. He is capable of playing either alone upfront or with another forward. Romelu Lukaku, who is also his hero and mentor, has been likened to him. He will provide Leipzig’s offence, which already features players like Dani Olmo, Christopher Nkunku, and Andre Silva, extra firepower.
