Viktor Gyökeres, the top scorer for Coventry City, has left the club and joined Sporting Lisbon for a club-record price plus add-ons.
The 25-year-old Swedish international joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion in January 2021, and after making an impression, he signed a three-year contract to make the move permanent.
Gyökeres was a prolific and consistent performer for Coventry City, netting 43 goals in 116 appearances for the club, including 18 goals in 47 games in his first full season and 23 goals in 50 games in his second season, which saw the Sky Blues reach the Championship Play-Off Final. He also collected two Championship Player of the Month awards and received more call-ups from his national team.
Coventry City expressed their gratitude to Gyökeres for his service and achievements and wished him all the best for his future.
Executive Chairman Doug King said:
“We are delighted to announce that we have finalised a deal that is fair and beneficial for all parties involved and completed the transfer of Viktor Gyökeres to Sporting Lisbon. Viktor was an outstanding player for us and we are very happy with his progress under our excellent coaching staff. This is a record-breaking fee for Coventry City but it will be paid over an extended period of time and Brighton & Hove Albion will receive a sizable share. We have already brought in some quality players and we will continue to do so, but this income will also support us with our infrastructure projects that the club is undertaking.”
