With many important players leaving the club this summer, Chelsea’s midfield is undergoing a significant rebuild. In addition to N’Golo Kante leaving as a free agent and Tiemoue Bakayoko being released, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Mason Mount have already been sold. Conor Gallagher’s position with the club is currently in doubt as well.
Chelsea was keen to find Enzo Fernandez the ideal partner and transform their midfield. Although personal conditions have been agreed upon, negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion for Moises Caicedo have dragged on and a deal with the Seagulls has not yet been achieved.
Fernandez, Gallagher, Andrey Santos, Cesare Casadei, and Carney Chukwuemeka now make up Chelsea’s midfield. Considering the possibility of Casadei and Santos leaving on loan, the squad might use the addition of more than one midfielder. After Caicedo’s contract is signed, the team has to find another midfielder to add to their depth.
Gallagher was previously thought to be a player Chelsea was prepared to sell for the right price. In January, Everton made a bid of £45 million, but the Englishman declined. In light of recent rumours linking Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Atletico Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur has now identified Gallagher as a potential replacement. As a backup plan, the Spurs are also thinking of Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa.
Ange Postecoglou, the new manager of Tottenham, respects Gallagher for his work ethic, but Chelsea cannot afford to lose another midfielder without adding more players. Chelsea’s midfield lacks depth right now, with just Fernandez and Gallagher having sufficient experience. Santos and Casadei are yet to make an appearance in the Premier League, and Chukwuemeka is still honing his abilities.
However, Chelsea’s position on Gallagher’s sale can alter if they are successful in acquiring Caicedo and another midfielder. Due to the need for more depth and experience in the team, the club is now hesitant to let go of the brilliant midfielder.
