Early in the year, the Chargers hired Kellen Moore as their offensive coordinator, giving him ample time to form some opinions on Justin Herbert.
Moore said that Herbert’s ability to comprehend the offence and respond to play calls in practice during the team’s offseason programme was “really, really impressive” to Albert Breer of SI.com. Moore could only learn that by working with Herbert, but after observing him from a distance, he had some sense of Herbert’s physical prowess.
After seeing Herbert up close this spring, several fresh insights have been added to that existing understanding.
Yeah, there’s some obvious stuff. The biggest thing is obviously his arm talent. But his combination of size, throwing ability, athleticism, I mean, there is only a few on earth that can have that combination, and play at such a high level. It is really fun to see. I was a 6-foot, kind of hanging-on quarterback for six years. And I laugh, there is a few throws sometimes he makes that I say, ‘I would never think about trying that throw, but here we are.’ It’s opened my eyes to some things.”
Moore did not go into detail about what those things may be, but soon long, we’ll get to see how his cooperation with Herbert works in practice. It’s just one of several responses that will influence what seems to be a tough competition in the AFC for postseason positions.
