By Justin Fields, a quarterback with the Bears, reportedly declared that he already ranks among the best running quarterbacks in NFL history. When questioned about the greatest five running quarterbacks of all time in an interview for the All Things Covered podcast, Fields boldly said that he should be included in that list.
Fields list Michael Vick, Cam Newton, Lamar Jackson, and Steve Young as the other four quarterbacks he believes belong in the elite running quarterback group. Interestingly, other noteworthy figures like Bobby Douglass, another former Bears quarterback, Fran Tarkenton, Steve McNair, and Randall Cunningham were not on his list. With his remarkable 968-yard running season in 1972, Douglass held the league’s quarterback rushing record for many years.
His assertion is supported by Fields’ own past season’s performance. He amassed astounding 1,143 running yards, which ranks as the second-highest total in NFL history for a quarterback. Fields’ achievement was only topped by Lamar Jackson’s outstanding 2019 campaign, during which he racked up 1,206 running yards. Although some could argue that it is too soon for Fields to be considered one of the all-time greats, there is no disputing his future ability to become the greatest running quarterback in history.
Fields’ self-assurance in his skills is impressive, and his exceptional speed and agility on the pitch give his dreams a solid foundation. It will be interesting to watch how he further establishes his position as one of the best running quarterbacks in NFL history as he advances and gains experience in the game.
